MARCH 2025

MARCH 2025 Hi. This is my library card. With this card, I have access to over 47,000 book available at the Oak Harbor Public Library. With this card, I also have access to the Ohio Digital Library and over 500,000 books in our digital catalog. With this card, I also have access to all the books available in over 100 library systems in our library consortium. With this card, I also have access to all the books available in WorldCat, the world’s largest and most comprehensive catalog of library resources. That’s over 72,000 libraries worldwide. In short, I have access to an infinite number of books—millions doesn’t cover the amount of books I have available with my library card. Mind Blowing!!! Movie of the Month Starring: Tom Hanks as Richard Young Robin Wright as Margaret Young Paul Bettany as Al Young And Kelly Reilly as Rose Young Directed by Robert Zemeckis Reviewed by Alex Huizar Director Robert Zemeckis has given us many classics throughout his film career, the Back to the Future trilogy, Forest Gump, Cast Away and Flight. Although I wouldn’t say that Here (his latest film) is an instant classic, it is still a pretty good film. Here is a film that is based on a 2014 graphic novel that is based on the same name and tells, in a nonlinear fashion, about different groups of people (and dinosaurs, yes, you read that right) that inhabit a small piece of land throughout the ages and their stories for each specific family. What makes this film interesting is the fact that most of the film is shot by one camera in static. In other words, the camera doesn’t move throughout the film and you’re basically watching it as if it were a play. Although film has done quite a few gimmicks throughout its inception as one long takes where there isn’t a cut between shots, or the occasional film where it takes place in one location, Here wants to do both and it can be quite confusing at times since it’s not telling the story in a linear fashion, but you will get the gist of it and what it is trying to tell with its narrative. Most of the cast give great performances like Tom Hanks, which isn’t a surprise, and the story itself is really nothing new, just your basic drama that tends to pull a few heartstrings, especially near the end, but I would ultimately give this a watch just for the how the film was shot alone. Call your local library to reserve a copy.

5 MARCH 2025 LAST WORD By Kathy Huffman Woman’s History Month In 1987 Congress passed Public Law 100-9 which designated March as “Women’s History Month” which celebrates and honors contributions to American History by women. This year’s theme presented by the National Women’s History Alliance (NWHA) is “Moving Forward Together! Women Educating & Inspiring Generations.”This theme celebrates the collective strength and influence of women who have dedicated their lives to education, mentorship, and leadership. Women and women’s organizations have been an integral part of the growth and development of Oak Harbor since the Village was merely a spot on the map called Hartford. Although some of these organizations and clubs may have come and gone, their influence is still felt and seen within the Village today. Numerous clubs, too many to list here, have graced Oak Harbor. Countless books and articles have been dedicated to Adolphus Kreamer, founding father of Oak Harbor, but little has been written regarding Eliza, his wife. Prior to 1850, there were no hotels in the area. Eliza had opened their home, turning it into a primitive bed & breakfast. Anyone staying in the area would take lodging with the Kreamers. An old wife’s tale states that if you drank from the Kraemer’s family well, you would either remain in Hartford or soon return. Thanks to Eliza many families stayed and prospered. In 1882 the Ladies Social Club was organized. The Club was headed by a ‘superb expounder’ who called the meetings to order by pounding a potato masher on a dish pan. Why was the formation of this club so important. In 1906, as the club entered the new century, officers were given traditional titles and the potato masher was exchanged for a gavel. Charging forward, the newly renamed Literary and Social Club believed in education through reading. One of their goals was to make books more readily available to everyone. In October of 1908 their hard work and dedication paid off with the opening of the Oak Harbor Public Library. A hundred and seventeen years later both the Club and the library are going strong. Formed as early as 1927ish, the Mothers Club of Oak Harbor was also dedicated to the improvement of education within the Village. In 1955(Con’t on page 6)

6 MARCH 2025 OAK HARBOR PUBLIC LIBRARY (Con’t from page 5) the Club was instrumental in the development and initiation of kindergarten classes in the BCS School District. The Oak Harbor Junior Woman’s Club began in the 1940s. It is an organization that brought women together to serve their communities through friendship, leadership, and personal development. Their mission was the promotion of civic, cultural, educational, and social welfare. Their programs and events helped young women throughout the county. The Club was affiliated with both the General Federation Women’s Club and the Ohio Federation of Women’s Club. February 1920, the Country Culture Club was founded, and in 1976 the Oak Harbor Young Farmers Wives was formed. Both clubs were dedicated to supporting activities and local organizations associated with agriculture within Ottawa county. Ten wives of local firefighters established the Oak Harbor V.F.D. Harborettes in May of 1974. This support group for the Oak Harbor Volunteer Fire Department main mission was to provide needed meals and supplies to the men during fire calls. This March, let us remember those words spoken by President Jimmy Carter. “From the first settlers who came to our shores, from the first American Indian families who befriended them, men and women have worked together to build this nation. Too often the women were unsung and sometimes their contributions went unnoticed. But the achievements, leadership, courage, strength and love of the women who built America was as vital as that of the men whose names we know so well.” March 2025 Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Programs with an R. please register online or call 419-8987001 1 2 Programs in Green are for children/teens 3 R Bingocize 10:30 Art Printmaking 3 4 Tai Chi 10 R Computer Class 10:30 History Museum 1-5 Art Printmaking 3 5 Storytime 11:30 Watercolor 12:30 Art Printmaking 3 6 History Museum 10-2 & 5-7 Art Printmaking 3 7 R Computer Class 10:30 R Bingocize 1:30 Pinochle 2 Art Printmaking 3 8 9 Programs in Blue are for adults 10 R Bingocize 10:30 Make a Suncatcher 3 11 Tai Chi 10 R Computer Class 10:30 History Museum 1-5 Make a Suncatcher 3 12 60 Plus Clinic 9:30 Coffee & Book 11 Storytime 11:30 Watercolor 12:30 Make a Suncatcher 3 13 Needlecrafts 9:30 History Museum 10-2 & 5-7 Make a Suncatcher 3 14 R Computer Class 10:30 R Bingocize 1:30 Pinochle 2 Make a Suncatcher 3 15 R Avoiding Scams and Financial Exploitation 10 16 For the Bingocize class, register with Melanie at Ottawa Co Health Dept. 419-734-6800 17 R Bingocize 10:30 R Watercolor Butterfly Craft with Mary 2 Lego Boost 3 18 Tai Chi 10 R Computer Class 10:30 History Museum 1-5 Lego Boost 3 OCOGS 5:30 19 Storytime 11:30 Watercolor 12:30 Lego Boost 3 Wicked Wed Bookclub 5:30 20 History Museum 10-2 & 5-7 Lego Boost 3 21 R Computer Class 10:30 R Bingocize 1:30 Pinochle 2 Lego Boost 3 22 R Saloons, Bars, & Taverns of Oak Harbor 10 23 24 R Bingocize 10:30 Grow Seeds 3 25 Tai Chi 10 R Computer Class 10:30 History Museum 1-5 Grow Seeds 3 4th Tues Book Club 5:30 26 Storytime 11:30 Watercolor 12:30 Grow Seeds 3 27 Needlecrafts 9:30 History Museum 10-2 & 5-7 Grow Seeds 3 28 R Computer Class 10:30 R Bingocize 1:30 Pinochle 2 Grow seeds 3 29 30 31 R Bingocize 10:30
