JUNE 2025 Our Summer Library Program begins June 3. This year’s theme is Color Our World. All children and their adults are invited to attend the programs. It’s always a fun time! Mickey 17 Robert Pattinson as Mickey 17 and Mickey 18 Mark Ruffalo as Kenneth Marshall Toni Collette as Yifa Marshall Directed by: Bong Joon Ho Reviewed by Alex Huizar Mickey 17 is a science fiction/dark comedy about Mickey leaving Earth to escape a loan shark from murdering him and joins a space ship crew that is heading to the planet Niflheim where he works as an “expendable”, a dangerous job that always seems to end in death, therefore they make another version of him, a clone, to take over where he left off. After a mishap where they believe 17 is dead, they create 18 and the two Mickey’s must do whatever they can to survive because an egomaniacal politician wants to put an end to clones. Mickey 17 sets up a captivating storyline about midway through the film when the two Mickey’s meet. Pattinson does a great job as the sensitive, naïve Mickey 17 and the rougher and more aggressive Mickey 18. Mark Ruffalo plays a politician that you might recognize from real life (even though Ruffalo said in interviews he is in no way portraying him) but by the way he speaks and the facial expressions he makes, it’s not hard to decipher who he is trying to portray as this “failed politician”. Ultimately the story itself isn’t anything new or different, it’s about the underdog taking on the establishment and the fight for survival. Some of the actors give cheesy performances and that is where the negatives of this film come in. This film has a great cast but some of the worst performances they give in their career. I give Mickey 17 three out of five stars. Call your local library to reserve a copy today.

5 JUNE 2025 LAST WORD By KATHY HUFFMAN The Oak Harbor High School was built in 1875 as a 3 story, 6 room brick building with an addition added on in 1889. However, by 1910 the building was deemed unsafe and closed on May 11, 1911. The school was torn down and construction on the new OHHS began in June of 1911. The cornerstone was taken from the 1875 building and re-set in the new 1911 building. A metal box made by George A. Meyer, which contained memorabilia, was sealed within the cornerstone. On May 16th, 2025, a piece of Oak Harbor history, which sparked curiosity in most folk was revealed. After standing sentry for 114 years, the cornerstone was salvaged, the time capsule within was removed, and the contents displayed. The contents of the time capsule included the following: Newspapers: Cleveland Plain Dealer July 31, 1911; Cleveland Leader July 31, 1911; Toledo Blade July 31, 1911; Toledo News-Bee July 31, 1911; Ottawa County Exponent July 29, 1911; and the Oak Harbor Press July 28, 1911. Postcards (4): view of old school building, town hall, local churches collage, and the Aschbacher HS band. Along with one Chamblin’s bread checks which could be redeemed for one loaf of bread, name plate of Editor Gosline, Bacon and Huber’s business card, and Contractor Herman’s letterhead and business card. Also included were the names of the Board of Education, J.M. Neipp, President, W.A. Campbell, Clerk, L.D. Auxter, D.D.S., J.O. Atwater, and Elza Chamblin. Names of the teachers. Supt. George F. A paper containing a list of building architects: Messrs. Bacon and Huber, Toledo OH, Builder Frank J. Herman, Toledo OH, Plumbers Ehing & Co. Toledo OH, Builder’s Foreman Henry A. Oldiges. One of the items of particular interest was the postcard depicting the Aschbacher’s High School Band, pictured here. The photograph was taken on May 30, 1907, by George Smith who stenciled the name of the band on the drumhead when he processed the photo. The instruments were owned by the students except for the bass drum and tuba which were borrowed from the Knights of Pythias Band. Band activities, except for practice sessions, were held outside of the school. During the summers of 1907 and 1908 the band gave a series of concerts on Saturday nights. They performed on a bandstand located within a vacant lot where the Croghan Colonial Bank now stands. Like their modern-day counterparts, the band provided marching music for the Memorial Day parade from the school to Union Cemetery. The band dissolved on June 1, 1909, when George Aschbacker moved to Chicago.
